Scottsdale,
Ariz., June 7, 2000 -- Sensory Science Corporation (AMEX:
VCR) today announced it has entered into a strategic relationship
with PortalPlayer Inc. to jointly develop next generation digital
media players as well as future digital products and technologies
for the living room. PortalPlayer, a provider of end-to-end systems
for playback and recording of digital media content for consumer
electronics manufacturers, will work with Sensory Science to provide
enhanced functionality and capabilities for the digital media player/recorder
market. The PortalPlayer platform is the industry's first single
chip solution supporting direct recording of CD content in MP3 file
formats.
Utilizing this unique technology, Sensory Science's next generation
portable digital media players will have the ability to directly
record CD content in MP3 file formats without a PC, while remaining
fully compliant with Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) standards.
The platform supports multiple decoding formats for playback, and
its features are fully upgradeable through the download of new firmware.
To date, PortalPlayer has announced support for MP3, Advanced Audio
Codec (AAC), MicroSoft® Windows Media™ Audio, and QDesign decoder
technology.
"We're excited to be working closely with PortalPlayer to develop
the advanced technologies that will drive next-generation portable
digital media players, and we expect that this is the first in a
series of announcements detailing our initiatives to provide end-to-end
solutions," said Roger Hackett, Sensory Science's chairman and chief
executive officer. "PortalPlayer's innovative Internet music-ready
platforms provide compelling capabilities to Internet music lovers,
and fits directly with our strategy of providing consumers with
the most convenient, advanced, feature-laden portable digital media
players in the market."
Through its collaboration with PortalPlayer, Sensory Science can
focus its resources on brand-level feature differentiation, which
has been a hallmark of its digital media player strategy to date.
In addition, Sensory Science gains the ability to be even more responsive
to the emerging standards and technologies of this industry, particularly
related to security and digital rights management. The consumer
will benefit because both features and security systems can be easily
upgraded, keeping the product at the forefront of technology long
after the purchase.
"We specifically selected Sensory Science to be one of our early
technology and marketing partners, because we think they're one
of the up and coming companies that really 'gets it' when it comes
to the future of digital media," said John Mallard, PortalPlayer's
president and chief executive officer. "We look forward to a strong
relationship with Sensory Science in both the development of technologies
for the digital media player market as well as for future digital
products for the living room."
