PortalPlayer Preface is a hardware and software platform that enhances the basic capability of SideShow-equipped Windows Vista laptops by adding a multimedia–rich environment. Preface adds audio, imaging, video and data synchronization capabilities to Windows Vista gadgets and other native applications with minimal power consumption.

Preface includes hardware, firmware and software for a complete solution that can be used in a turnkey design or customized to meet the manufacturer’s needs. Preface is powered by a dual-core PP5024 SoC with hardwired multimedia accelerators that deliver audio and rich QVGA video playback with minimal power consumption. Play music, photos, videos and display data at 50 to 100X battery efficiency.

During SideShow’s development, PortalPlayer worked in tight cooperation with Microsoft, helping to define and debug all specifications and interfaces. Significantly, all of Microsoft’s testing of SideShow displays embedded in notebooks
were performed on Preface development boards.
